On Martyr's Day 3 June 2019, Hon. Nsubuga was caught on CCTV camera around Nakasero opposite Shoprite snatching an Itel phone worth Shs80,000 and wrapping it in a newspaper before walking off. The phone belonged to one Nicholas Karuhanga and was stacked with 4.5 million on his mobile money account.
Court orders arrest of MP accused of mobile phone theft
Buganda Road Grade Court Magistrate Sienna Owomugisha has ordered police to apprehend Busiro North MP Paul Nsubuga who skipped his court hearing for a case in which he is accused of stealing a mobile phone.
A case was filed against him by one Gloria Namengo, a resident of Kawempe Division, accusing him of larceny, she also released the video which went viral.
It wasn't until March 2021, one month after winning the Busiro North Parliamentary seat, that police traced the man in the video to Nsubuga going by his campaign pictures. At the time, he was brought before Grade One Magistrate Doreen Karungi but was soon released on bail of Shs400,000.
The arrest warrant comes after several missed court sessions since 2021, without justifiable reason, as reported by prosecution led by Judith Nyamwiza.
Owomugisha issued the arrest warrant after the prosecution led by Judith Nyamwiza told court that both the legislator and his sureties have skipped several sessions without any justifiable reasons.
Despite Nsubuga's lawyer, Juliet Nampeera presenting a medical document showing that the MP is currently on a 3-day bed rest recovering from malaria, prosecution objected saying that this could be one of the legislator's tactics to avoid court.
Owomugisha concurred with the objection and gave the greenlight to law enforcers to bring Hon. Nsubuga to court before 12 August, 2022.
The accused continues to profess his innocence.
