Bee keeper in Bushenyi blasted by grenade

Police in Bushenyi is carrying out investigations into an explosion that injured a resident of Rwentuha, while he was clearing his land.

The victim, identified as Abraham Ruhesi was hit by fragments from what police has called a grenade while clearing space in his apiary in Kyamagambo, Rwentuha Town Council in Bushenyi.

According to Kyamagambo chairperson, Benson Barekye, after the explosion residents rushed towards the vicinity on to find that their colleague had been blasted in the chest cavity and was lying on the ground unconscious.

Shocked residents responded to a bomb-like explosion only to find Ruhesi fallen to the ground with his stomach and chest severely injured,” Barekye said in an interview with local media.

Some of the eye-witnesses at the scene of the explosion said that Ruhesi was engaged for the afternoon in clearing his farm where he practices apiculture. He unknowingly tampered with the explosive device in the process and that's what triggered it.

He was clearing his piece of land for bee keeping when he unknowingly tampered what police described as a grenade,” said Abu Babyeyagira.

Rwentuha police promptly sealed off the scene to the public and by the time evening arrived, more explosives had been discovered.

Bushenyi Police spokesperson, Marshal Tumusiime, said that while scouting the area, they have found more explosives, ammunition and explosive scraps.

He noted that they are keeping the place off-limits for experts to carry on with investigations and safe recovery.

"We found another grenade, two bullets and fragments. We have taken full charge of the place as we are waiting for experts for further management, " he said.

The victim was rushed to Kampala Hospital were he is currently getting medical attention.
