selected for this exercise in an effort to make it a model village for sanitation in Makindye Division.

The clean-up involved unclogging blocked drainage channels, sweeping the streets and the collection of rubbish.

To further the gospel of the recently concluded World Toilet Day, AMREF Health provided cesspool tanks to provide relief to various families with latrines that required emptying.

In addition, the community was sensitized by various local leaders and representatives from the present organizations on how to prevent the spread and contraction of Ebola and Corona virus through sanitation and hygienic health practices.

Most emphasized among these was the washing of hands that saw children engage in a hand washing competition before freebies such as medicated soap and hand washing tanks were distributed to winners and other selected persons.

In an effort to curb the Corona Virus Disease, residents were offered free vaccination and booster shots courtesy of AMREF Health.

In a supplementary effort to better residents’ health and wellbeing, AMREF put in place HIV/AIDS testing facilities.

According to area leaders, Kisasizi zone has been one of the places in Kanyanya in dire need of sanitation services.

According to Sharifah Ahimbise, the Woman Counselor of Kabalagala, it is a breath of fresh air that the area was finally sanitized by the authorities.

She sent a special vote of thanks to AMREF Health for the initiative being taken to Kabalagala Parish.

Her appreciation was further re-echoed by administrator Zzimbe Paul, who represented the town clerk.

However, Zzimbe asked the Mayor Kasirye, the chief guest to see to it that the zone gets new roads. According to Zzimbe, the lack of roads makes the collection of rubbish difficult as rubbish collection trucks cannot reach most residents easily.

The AMREF Health project officer, Paul Mulinde said that the aim of such efforts by the organization is to ensure that the spread of diseases is controlled through changing people’s behavior.

He further added that this is being done through home improvement campaigns in which AMREF teams move from home to home in order to act with sufficient knowledge of the areas being reached out to.

Paul further added that the aim of the campaign is to not only fight diseases like Covid-19 and Ebola but also prevent any other diseases such as cholera that may crop up as a result of improper hygiene.

The AMREF Health representative encouraged residents to practice proper hand washing and thanked the Mayor for providing the initiative with vehicles to do the rubbish collection.

In reciprocal, Mayor Kasirye thanked all local leaders for a job well done and praised AMREF health for their financial contribution towards the cause of sanitation.

The Mayor said that the financial contribution meant a lot to the cause because government cannot do it alone as most government agencies are short of cash due to the current economic times.
