26 arrested in Kiwatule over death of UPDF major

26 people have been arrested by the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) and police following the death of a Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier.

A murder most foul?

According to Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, Maj Joseph Mukuraine, who was the Wazalendo Sacco manager (Entebbe branch) was found dead in the bathroom of Burunga guesthouse located in Kiwatule, a Kampala subub.

It has been reported that the deceased booked into the guesthouse on Tuesday for 3 days. On Friday, he was found dead in his bathroom after guesthouse personnel were forced to break the door to his room when they found he was not answering his door.

Other reports have it that while leaving Entebbe, the deceased had signed for Shs 24 million which has not been recovered, raising suspicion that the major could have been killed and the money taken.

Onyango says investigations into his death are underway and a number of suspects have been arrested to help with these inquiries.

With another UPDF major dead, many will be forced to recall the killing of Muhammed Kiggundu in 2016.

Kiggundu was a serving major in the UPDF.

In 1998 he faced accusations of being behind an attack on Kichwamba technical school which saw over 50 students burnt alive in their dormitories.

Emiliano Kayima, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, confirmed to that Kiggundu’s attackers started shooting at the major’s vehicle at around 7.30 a.m. local time in Wakiso, around 12 kilometers (seven miles) from the capital Kampala.

Kiggundu, who was driving a military vehicle, was cut down together with his bodyguard.
