In 1822, at an undetermined day but suspected to be in the evening, gave his eldest son Rukirabasaija Kaboyo Omuhundwa Kasusunkwanzi Olimi I Mwenge (alcohol/beer), as recorded by Rev. A. B. Fisher in September 1904 in The Geographical Journal.

After that evening, for whatever reason, Kaboyo embarked on a rebellion against his father which resulted in breaking away from Bunyoro-Kitara. He became the first Omukama of Tooro kingdom and reigned until 1861.

The king clearly had gotten a bone to pick with his father and their kingdom because when his old man died, he gave the succession a cold shoulder. He passed on in 1865.

However, in 1880 the kingdom the Kaboyo had fought to establish, fell back in the hands of Bunyoro for about a decade. This was after the reign of Omukama Katera, 9th ruler of Tooro. Kakende was not the rightful heir to the throne, but when his elder brother failed to return from Buganda, the people enthroned him.

After this mishap, Tooro experienced bloodshed at the hands of the queen of Ankole.

The current ruler is the youngest serving king of the kingdom King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. He was recently mountaineering Rwenzori with a group of hikers to promote Uganda as a mountain tourism destination.
