Itchy eyes; a sign that your body is trying to tell you the following

Eyes are known as the most complex organ after the brain. Experts say they are responsible for 90% of all the information we learn throughout our lives through observing, reading, thinking and writing.

Itchy eyes

Obviously, eyes are one of the most important and most delicate organs of the body. But if you have been observant, eyes aren't as protected as they should in our society. Most bodaboda riders go without visors in their helmets, most mechanics and painters don't wear goggles, and most people don't mind touching their eyes with dirty hands, especially if they start itching.

Itchy eyes could be an indication that something is wrong and experts say that if the problem is regular or consistent, one needs to see a doctor. Here are some possible causes of itchy eyes:

You may not have paid attention but your itchy eyes may be due to a particular food that you may be allergic to. It may take a while to notice if you don't eat this food regularly. Food allergies also impact body organs like the skin (mostly), gastrointestinal tract respiratory system and the eyes.

Your eyes may itch if they get dry due to the loss of moisture. Dry eyes just mean that there is a lack of production of tears to keep the eyes moist and healthy, resulting in irritation.

If itchiness in your eyes is season-specific, it could be due to an allergy to pollen particles in the air during a particular season. This may also occur due to dust particles in the air. You may also experience other symptoms like watery eyes, red eyes, runny nose and sneezing if you have a seasonal allergy.

Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition that can affect different parts of the body including the eyes. The skin surrounding your eyes is very sensitive and if it gets eczema, it might show symptoms like itchy and red eyes. You are also likely to have scaly skin around the eyes.

This is also a skin condition caused due to an allergen or allergic reaction. When your eyes come in contact with an irritating substance, they may get very itchy and scratchy. People with sensitive eyes are prone to catching contact dermatitis as these get easily triggered by allergens. Some of the common triggers include using eye makeup with chemicals, wearing contact lenses for longer periods, not removing eye makeup before going to bed, soap or detergent into the eyes, etc. In some people, contact dermatitis gets triggered with the use of hair dyes and perfumes.

Certain salts present in medicines might also trigger eye issues. If you have started taking a medicine recently and experiencing itchy eye problems post that, it could be its side effect. You should not ignore these small signs and report to the doctor. Change your medication to prevent eye complications.

One of the common reasons behind acute itching in the eyes is an eye infection. If your eyes continuously itch for a couple of days along with eye pain and light sensitivity, consult an eye specialist. Also, do not scratch your eyes often as bacteria present in your hand might enter the eyes and aggravate the condition.
