Black Panther star, Lupita Nyong'o, revealed in an interview with Harper's Bazaar Magazine yesterday, August 1, 2022, that exercise is like food for her mind. Depriving her of it leaves serious effects on her mood and mental state.

The 39-year-old disclosed that working out is not only to keep her body in shape, that ultimately her goal is to maintain equilibrium between her body and mind. Rather than approach working out with a body health orientation, she looks at it as part of her mental health.

For me, working out is very much a part of my mental health regimen. I find that I grow very lethargic when I don’t work out, and it changes my mood,” she admitted.

Back in 2018, when she was preparing for her role in Marvel's 'Black Panther' she hulked up.

"I remember coming home for Christmas and I couldn't fit into my clothes," Nyong'o said in an interview back in 2018.

But that's just work, she had to go over and beyond in preparing for her role as Nakia. She was a street fighter, so Nyong'o had to do jujitsu, capoeira and ring blades.

Her personal wellness regiment couldn't be farther from her profession's, she centres her exercise around being mentally and emotionally solid for her environment. This helps her attitude and fosters more personal care and thriving relationships.

For my own sake, and the sake of the people who I’m hanging out with, it’s better if I work out. It’s about caring for yourself,” she added.

It is for this reason that the 12 Years A Slave actress came to a personal understanding that going to the gym is optional because working with individual body weight is ideal. Furthermore, working within your means makes you more acquainted with your workout goals and needs.

"I’ve come to realise that working out does not require a gym. You can work out with your body weight, which I love. Personally, if I find ways to make my workouts easily achievable, it’s more likely I will commit to them. I have a jump rope that I love to use. I would play tag with my friends and get my heartbeat going. I think moving is important,” she remarked.

Some of the best workouts for mental wellness include walking, boxing and martial arts, running, resistance training, and swimming.
