Does getting rid of clutter reduce stress and anxiety?

The popular psychologist and public speaker, Jordan Peterson, has recently popularised the idea that one should set their house in perfect order before criticising the world, adding that making one's bed is a crucial way to start one's day.

Cluttered Room

As it turns out, clutter in your physical space brings stress and anxiety and by cleaning, organising, and reducing the clutter, you get to feel good about yourself and are able to focus better on more important matters in life, like work.

Living in a dirty and disorganised place does things to you that even your enemies don't wish on you, apparently, and the sooner we realise this, the faster we receive our healing, so to speak.

Here is how decluttering your physical space, whether at home or at office, can improve your overall well-being.

A good place to start is the place where you spend most of your time. Once you have cleaned it up and enjoyed the new environment for some time, it will be easier for you to tackle all the other places in your life. Hint, your bedroom should be highly considered as one of the places to start with.

Sometimes, clutter is created by things that don't matter; like shoes you hate, or files on your office desk that you haven't touched for ten years. A good place to start is to get rid of these things. Also, take time to know how things in your area make you feel. If for any reason, something you have does not make you feel great, get rid of it. Our stuff can trigger emotional states, without you noticing it.

Do you know that cleaning your space can be daunting? Take a moment to focus! Breathe deeply and concentrate on the section that you want for yourself. Breathing is related to lowering stress levels and good mental health. So, take one or ten deep breaths before you start. It will help you get motivated and more focused.

An ugly environment can give you the heebie-jeebies. Work on having your spaces look beautiful. Pin pictures, place flowers, anything that gives you a great mood. Beautiful things bring beauty to one's soul. Get rid of anything that is gathering dust. Give it away or throw it out. It's making you sick in more ways than you can imagine.
