The 5 Things You Didn't Know About Daniel Omara

Daniel Omara is a veteran of the Mic Check Comedy writing room as well as one of the most technically proficient comedians working in Uganda today.

Uganda's answer to Chris Rock, Daniel Omara

His faultless sense of timing and lightning wit ensured that nightclub-comedy bubbled over into television. A medium which gave us the TV series, The Hostel.

Being screened in 13 countries, The Hostel put Omara’s career in fast forward motion while he continued to make the sound of words sing on the standup comedy stage.

Although he is one of Uganda's most beloved comedians, there's a lot we don't know about this hilarious man.

Here Five Things we are sure you didn't know about him:

  1. Daniel contracted Tuberculosis in 2011. He was on medication for 8 solid months! Today, Omara describes himself as a 'TB survivor.' And yet writer Timothy Bukumunhe (TB) claims he is innocent of Daniel's woes.
  2. Daniel was the first comic to ever perform at Big Brother Africa (BBA) Live. This was in 2010. And he scorched the stage with a blazing performance that had him listed in every respectable top 20 list of African comedians.
  3. He was afraid of the dark until he was 17! No, this is not a joke. Daniel would wet his pants as soon as the lights were off. This meant that he was probably still a virgin until this age too. We'll ask him and let you know later. One thing we are sure of, however, is that philosopher Plato was correct when he said, 'We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.' And Daniel and the light, the spotlight to be exact, are best buddies.
  4. Daniel co-founded/ recruited and trained comedic talent for 4 comedy platforms in 11 years. These platforms are: Krackers Comedy, Punk'd Bunch, Comedy Files, Another Comedy Club. That's why when you listen to his observational humor, you quickly realize that it shaped the template for 70% of the comedians working in Uganda today. While the other 30% are still trying to figure out how best to imitate The Master (Omara’s nickname).
  5. Mr. Omara, yes we have started showing him respect, went to Busoga College Mwiri, Greenhill Academy, Katikamu SDA, St Michael Sonde, St Lawrence Paris Palais. We are not sure if this line up of schools is in descending order of academic merit. Or whether St Lawrence Paris Palais is in France and is also Daniel's way of saying 'au revoir' to a Mwiri-grade education. As promised before, we shall ask him if this school was the reason he stayed a virgin until he was in his late 20s.

There you have it folks, how to be Daniel Omara in five little steps.
