Chipper Card: Unlimited online shopping, global payments now possible in Uganda

Ever gone window shopping or shopping online or in an application on your phone, filled your shopping cart then stared at dreaded "Choose a payment" options without an option for you? Even with money on your mobile money account and bank account, you still couldn't pay for your items.

Not anymore.

The Chipper Visa Card is the piece that has been missing in the money payment heirachy which started with the introduction of Chipper Cash that fixed sending and receiving money internationally directly on the phone.

Now customers can pay for their Netflix, DSTV, shopping from international brands through websites and in-app stores using the Chipper digital Card.

Convenient and secure

The Chipper Card is a virtual card that is tied to a personal Chipper Cash account in the app. There's no need for registration, paper work or a bank account to get it.

It is exclusively digital. You just can't lose it.

It is recognised by the Bank of Uganda and powered by the United Bank of Africa which translates into secure money and data wherever it is used.

It is directly funded using the Chipper digital wallet which wallet can be loaded using mobile money.

Opportunities

The Ugandan launch coincides with the FIFA World Cup 2022 with just two days after the opening match of the tournament. Chipper Cash took the opportunity to give back to its customers from the sports fraternity. Under the campaign Africa to the World "Spend to Win", they chose two winners, one of them, 27-year-old Ellen Magyezi and aeronautic engineer from Nakasongola. Magyezi is one of the Card's pioneer users to shop, stream and subscribe.

Although mobile money opened up a new world of possibilities in regular banking, it was limited by upfront fees and inability for customers to make online payments. Filling this gap has cemented Chipper in the local banking sector for Ugandans.

"For us, bringing the Chipper Card to Uganda is all about enablement. Not everyone can easily access traditional card products. However, now anyone with a smartphone and mobile money account can download the Chipper app, and access an internationally accepted card for free," said Dan Tumuramye, Chipper Cash Country Director, Uganda.
