It is Throwback Thursday and renown Ugandan BBC journalist Alan Kasujja does remember when rap icon Lauryn Hill sneaked into the pearl of Africa.

Alan Kasujja revealed these jaw dropping details yesterday in a twitter thread, narrating how one of his Budonian ‘boys’ ran into Lauryn Hill at Equatorial hotel.

Lauryn Hill is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, and record producer. She is often regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time as well as being one of the most influential musicians of her generation.

She is known for being a member of rap group Fugees, and for her 1998 solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which became one of the best-selling albums of all time. Hill has won many accolades, including eight Grammy Awards, the most for a female rapper to this day.

Lauryn Hill is the Holy grail of rap.

According to Kasujja, Lauryn sneaked into Kampala for a break.

“True story. Lauryn Hill sneaks into Kla for a break. She’s chilling at the Hotel Equatorial poolside. Walks over to the ice-cream parlor. My boy Brian is there. Says hi to her. Tells her she looks familiar. Asks if she went to Kings College Budo. Like him,” reads the first thread of the tweet.

In the second thread, Kasujja reveals that ‘his boy’ insists that Lauryn looks familiar only for her to smile and introduce herself as Lauryn. She also insists that that she does not know Bryan from anywhere.

The plot thickens in the third part of the thread.

“A day or so later, Bryan is watching Channel O and who does he see? Lauryn Hill. He kicks himself. He can’t believe he met Lauryn Hill and asked her if she went to King’s College Budo,” he reveals.

Another tweep identified as Moses confirms Kasujja’s claims saying that he met her too.

“True story. I met her too, at Hotel equatorial sitting on the ground and I stop and tell her she looks like Lauryn Hill. We had a good laugh and I kept it moving, half an hour later someone tells me they just met Rohan Marley and it hits me that she was the real Lauryn Hill,” he notes.

Veteran journalist and PR practitioner Simon Kaheru supplements Kasujja’s story confirming that Hill was indeed in the country.

According to Kaheru, the rumor of her being in the country spread fast and got journalists in the newsroom.

He further adds that he went over to Equatorial hotel to see if she was really there. At the end of it all, he confirms that she was really there by the poolside sipping on something fresh.

“I went up to where she was lying on the deck chair. She was sipping on a tall drink, shades half on with a wide sun hat. Really guilty of being totally cool. But she seemed much, much smaller than I expected,” he revealed.

The last rapper to cause such pandemonium among entertainment news desks in Uganda was Kanye West, who rented out the entire Chobe lodge.

His presence in the country was so major that it was sought by the country’s top most office.
