Men in music business will 'mislead you if you aren’t smart' - Carol Nantongo

Songstress Carol Nantongo advised young girls in the music industry to be patient and play the long game because showing desperation will expose them to exploitative men.

Nantongo made the remarks while commenting on the accusations lodged by songstress Sumayya Sheeba against Eddy Yawe, saying he refused to do a song with her after declining to have sex with him.

In September, Sheeba said they were to work together on a song titled Akalosa, but she was surprised to discover that he had instead collaborated on the project with a different artiste.

Sheeba reportedly met the founder of Kamwokya-based Dream Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2017 where they agreed on terms of working together.

She was to foot all the bills involved in the production process. However, according to her, Yawe decided to give the project to another musician called TYBA.

Yawe has denied the allegations.

Commenting on the incident, Nantongo, who has done a song with Yawe, said: “Every woman will always get men's attention. Every woman will always draw men's interest. But you're free to accept or refuse. Unless you lost a dog, always be ready for men to want to talk to you.”

She said that some women want to become successful so fast and that’s how they fall into these traps. She cited the example of the girl who accused Fresh Daddy of rape and later retracted her statement.

“We want quick success. You want to be a musician, you want to be a star, and men mislead you. Such happens. If you're not smart, like that girl, at her age, you'll be misled to make lots of mistakes,” she said.

On women who want to be a star like her, she said: “Let them come and sing,... But be calm and patient, because getting one hit song doesn't guarantee more hit songs… So, you have to be patient because the industry is not easy. If you accept men to direct you, they'll run through you.”

The Oliwa singer revealed that she has plans for holding a concert in the coming year.
