Beenie Man Show: We invested Shs1.1 billion, sold only 753 tickets - Promoter

Top Boy Entertainment Records, the events company that organised The Big Show, which had Jamaican dancehall singer Beenie Man on its line-up, said it invested US$300,000 (about Shs1.1 billion) in the concert, but only 753 revellers bought tickets.

In a statement issued Sunday night, Top Boy said despite having 15,500 revellers at the show, "only 753 bought genuine tickets".

Most people who went to the concert didn't buy the figures. That they are exaggerated.

Apart from Beenie Man, who was performing in Kampala for the third time after 13 years, the other international acts were Nigerian crooner Oxlade Official, and South African entertainers Focalistic, Mellow, and Sleazy.

Of all the international acts, only Beenie Man performed.

Oxlade refused to perform, saying the promoter refused to pay the amount they had agreed upon.

"Promoters need to learn to do the right thing when booking artists. You invite an artist to come to perform at your event, you were given a booking agreement which you duly signed. Then you refused to honor your own part of the contract and refuse to pay me as at when due," he said in a statement issued Saturday afternoon.

"Michael of Top Boy Entertainment UG you owe Ugandan people an explanation as to why I did not perform last night! I would love to go into details of what happened."

According to the Ku Lo Sa singer, the promoter also canceled his return flight.

"Even after you knowingly canceled my return flight back to Nigeria. And to my Ugandan family, I definitely hope to give you guys a show soon!" he said in the statement shared on his social media channels.

There were rumours that Beenie Man, too, hadn't been paid, but Top Boy said he was paid. The Jamaican artiste, however, noted that the tickets, at a base price of Shs150,000, were highly priced thus the low turnup.

The show, which was held at Lugogo Cricket Oval, also attracted performances from Vinka, Winnie Nwagi, Azawi, Grenade and Zex Bilangilangi.

In the statement, Top Boy blamed some of its staff, partners, and sponsors for working against the success of the show.
