Joshua Cheptegei and six other Ugandans nominated

Yesterday, Avance Media dropped the list of its annual ranking of the 100 most Influential Young Africans. This list also celebrates the brightest and most successful young Africans in different areas in Africa.

A total of seven Ugandans have been named amongst the most influential people on the list for the year 2021, comprising 52 men and 48 women representing 32 countries in Africa.

Joshua Cheptegei, Vanessa Nakate, Leah Namugerwa, Melvyn Lubega, Joanita Babirye and Hilda Flavia Nakabuye are the seven honorees.

According to the list of nominations, Nigeria leads with 21 people. Kenya along with South Africa each having 10 people. The Pearl of Africa, Uganda, got seven nominations followed by Ghana with six nominations.

On the list are celebrity personalities like Mohammed Salah, musicians Burna Boy and Davido, Adenike Oladosu, Elizabeth Wanjiru Wathuti, Sadio Mane and Chelsea club goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Amongst the seven that were nominated in Uganda, Nakate is a climate justice activist and Chemutai is an Olympic medalist and champion.

Namugerwa is a youth climate activist in Uganda known for leading tree planting campaigns and Lubega is the first ever African to receive “The Lindas Award. The Lindas Award was established by the Endeavor Global Board of Directors in 2019 in honor of Endeavor Co-founder and CEO Linda Rottenberg's legendary enthusiasm and passion. The Lindas are an annual award that recognizes and celebrates entrepreneurs in Endeavor's network.

Babirye is a climate and environmental rights activist and also a co-founder and director for Girls for Climate Action.

Cheptegei is an Olympic Gold Medalist and World Cross Country Champion, and World Record Holder.

According to Avance Media, this year’s list looks at a wide coverage on individuals with different projects and talents trying to make their ends meet as well as making Africa proud and inspiring the young generation.

Prince Akpah, who is the managing director for Avance Media, says Africa is proud to have personalities that inspire many youths out there through talents, technology, business as well as technology.

One’s ability to excel in leadership together with the performance in sharing knowledge as well as being an accomplished young African are part of the way one is selected for the Avance Media’s 100 Most Influential Young Africans.
