Muliisa said Ecobank staff will participate in all activities in the gala organised by the Uganda Bankers Association, an umbrella organization for financial institutions.

"Absolutely, we'll participate [in all the games], but we will also focus on the ones where... we are strong. We also want to participate where we will win," she told this reporter.

"This time specifically we think we are going to participate more than we have done in the past."

The gala, which will kick off tomorrow, Friday with a campaign dubbed 21 Days of Fitness, is running under the theme: ‘Wellness. Networking. Teamwork.’

During the 21 days, participants will film themselves engaging in fitness exercises and upload the content on a digital platform that has been created to track participation.

Grace Muliisa underscored the wide-ranging benefits of getting involved in the gala.

"First of all, the theme for this year's sports gala is wellness, networking, and teamwork. It helps bring the entire banking fraternity together for networking, but also promotes teamwork in the industry," the Ecobank managing director said.

"And when I talk about wellness, I think wellness is much broader... Wellness is not only good for the body, but it's also good for the mind. So, this is one of those seasons in the year when we need to check how healthy we are as a team, and how fit we are,... but more importantly plan for next year. So, it is such good timing for us that after spending almost two years at home [due to the Covid lockdown]... it brings the team together, brings the industry together and it's a good time for us as we close down the year planning for next year," she elaborated, adding that they are internally going to promote the fete through team challenges.

"It does promote health for the teams... but more importantly, like I said, it's one of those times when the teams get together. Sports naturally promote teamwork. It's a good thing for us at Ecobank, and it's one that we are going to promote specifically this year," she continued.

"We are going to start out with a challenge within the team, where each one of us, at least every single day should achieve, in terms of footsteps, about 2000 footsteps every day."

Muliisa went on: "And it's easy,... You just need to know when to start and stop, but it's one of those that you can actually do, not only this season, but you can continue to do because, as I said, once you're healthy, your mind is more alert, you think better, you are a lot more productive."

Ecobank Head of Marketing Charity Kamusiime reechoed some of the managing director's points, highlighting the value of networking through such events.

"Every year the Uganda Bankers Association holds... the sports gala... to bring the banking fraternity together to network, share ideas, and just basically enjoy life," Kamusiime said.

"So, it's just that one day in a year the bankers get together to have a good time and be fit and network... As a bank that's thriving to be top five in five, it's important for us to participate. It helps us to get insight on what different banks are doing. But most importantly is to get our staff and employees get fully engaged," she went on.

"Part of our engagement policy at Ecobank is to involve; we are an involving bank. We are a bank that is there for our people. It's important that our people have the ability to network with their peers in other banks just to enjoy and make new friends outside Ecobank."

She added: "What that does, it opens opportunities... either in the gaming space, also in the professional space... It makes people get new friends that if we wanted information, say, from the central bank and you don't have a contact, you can call someone."

Just like any other industry, according to Kamusiime, the banking sector also benefits from cooperation.

According to organizers, outdoor games will be held on October 16 at Kyambogo University, while indoor games will be at MTN Arena.

William Frederick Blick, a member of the International Olympic Committee, was the chief guest at the launch and he asked the Association to come up with a project to train athletes in financial management. He noted that many athletes struggle to survive when their sports careers end because they didn't manage their finances properly and have no qualifications to get jobs away from sports.

Winners will be awarded on October 23.
