The prize, the Founders Award for best narrative feature, was one of several awards for “Burning Cane,” which its filmmaker, Phillip Youmans, now 19, has said was inspired by the blues. He also won for the movie’s cinematography, and Wendell Pierce, who stars as the troubled clergyman, won best actor in an American feature. The jury described Youmans as “a voice that is searingly original,” according to a statement, and likened him to the Southern writers William Faulkner and Eudora Welty.

Best actress in an American movie went to Haley Bennett, who plays a pregnant woman obsessed with consuming dangerous objects in the thriller “Swallow.”

On the international side, “House of Hummingbird” (Beol-sae), directed by Bora Kim, was named best feature, and its star, Ji-hu Park, best actress. The South Korean movie is a coming-of-age tale about a Seoul eighth-grader. Best actor went to a star of the Turkish-language “Noah Land,” Ali Atay, who plays a son accompanying his ailing father on a journey to the village where he grew up.

“Scheme Birds,” which The Times critic Ben Kenigsberg described as “a frank look at life in a Scottish housing project,” was named best documentary. It was directed by Ellen Fiske and Ellinor Hallin.

The Tribeca Film Festival continues through Sunday.

Teenage filmmaker wins top prize at the Tribeca Film Festival

A teenage writer and director took home the top prize at the Tribeca Film Festival for his tale of an alcoholic preacher in rural Louisiana, festival organizers announced Thursday.

For the event, part of the Directors Series of the Tribeca Film Festival, which the actor helped found, De Niro loosely played the role of interviewer. He asked Scorsese about specific elements of “Mean Streets,” “The Last Waltz,” “Raging Bull,” “Casino,” “King of Comedy,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and his recent drama about faith, “Silence.” As clips from those movies played on a huge screen behind them, the colleagues, both in sport coats and open-collar shirts, turned around in their seats onstage and leaned back to watch.

Sprinkled throughout the conversation were names like Terrence Malick (who wrote Scorsese after seeing “Silence” and asked, “What does Christ want from us?”), Michael Powell (the “Red Shoes” director whom Scorsese consulted when he was working on “Raging Bull”) and Norman Mailer (the author and fight fan who urged a reluctant Scorsese to make that film).

Scorsese spoke at length about his hesitance when it came to “Raging Bull,” in part because he didn’t know how to shoot sports. “If there’s a ball involved, forget it,” he said onstage, going on to explain that De Niro pushed for the film and broke down the boxing scenes at length for him.

In fact, many of the filmmaker’s reminiscences involved the star urging him to take on a project or try out a performer. Late in their discussion, the two remembered that when De Niro was reading with potential cast members for the 1993 adaptation “This Boy’s Life,” he called Scorsese.

“You said this kid, DiCaprio, is really good to work with sometime,” Scorsese said onstage, “and you don’t usually say that.”

After explaining that DiCaprio was actually reading for a secondary part, not the lead role he eventually landed in that film, De Niro said, “Leo, are you out here?”

It turned out the actor, in a Los Angeles Dodgers cap, had been in the audience all along. But he stayed seated and didn’t talk about his work in five Scorsese features.

Scorsese and De Niro didn’t divulge much about “The Irishman,” the drama about organized crime and Jimmy Hoffa that also stars Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, a frequent collaborator of theirs. But the movie came up at a few points in the discussion (though neither addressed the fact that Netflix is releasing it). For instance, while talking about scores that borrow themes from other movies, the director mentioned that “The Irishman’s” mix includes borrowed elements.

De Niro recalled telling the director he had to read “I Heard You Paint Houses,” the 2004 book on which it’s based. And Scorsese told De Niro onstage, “You really felt the heart of this character and this situation.”

The director acknowledged that the material represented a return to the milieu of mobster tales like “Goodfellas” and “Casino” that the two are well known for, “but I think and I hope from a different vantage point. The years have gone by and you see things in a special way.”

In Scorsese’s view, the film is dealing with “the essence of who the people are, not necessarily the trappings around them.”

Scorsese and De Niro talk 'The Irishman,' and DiCaprio is in the audience

NEW YORK — Director Martin Scorsese and his frequent star Robert De Niro shared a few small details about their forthcoming film, “The Irishman,” as part of a wide-ranging discussion Sunday at the Beacon Theater in New York, where audience members were surprised to learn that Leonardo DiCaprio was in their midst.

Chadwick Boseman, speaking for the “Black Panther” cast, which took the SAG equivalent of best picture, said that he was often asked if he expected the Marvel superhero film to be such a blockbuster. (It has earned $1.3 billion globally.) He said the Nina Simone song “To be Young, Gifted and Black” came to mind as he thought about the lack of diversity in most Hollywood films. “We know what it’s like to be told there’s not a screen for you to be featured on,” he continued. But “Black Panther,” he said, meant that “we could be full human beings in the roles that we were playing, that we could create a world that could exemplify a world we wanted to see.”

“Mrs. Maisel” swept the comedy honors, including outstanding comedy series ensemble, and best comedy actress and actor for Rachel Brosnahan, who plays the title character, and Tony Shalhoub, who plays her father. “This Is Us,” the NBC melodrama, took best drama series ensemble.

There were few overtly political moments Sunday evening, which more often focused on guild issues. Patricia Arquette, named best actress in a miniseries for “Escape at Dannemora,” thanked Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating Russia’s 2016 election interference, as she left the stage. But she drew much more applause from fellow union members when she called out production companies that didn’t pay performers overtime.

The SAG lifetime achievement award went to Alan Alda, 82, the veteran actor probably best known for the 1972-83 series “M.A.S.H.” In July, he revealed that he had been living with Parkinson’s disease for more than three years but that he had been leading a full life despite the movement disorder.

After being introduced by Tom Hanks, who noted that the actor’s real name is Alphonso D’Abruzzo, Alda took the stage to a lengthy standing ovation from an audience that included his “M.A.S.H” co-star Mike Farrell. “It may never have been more urgent to see the world through another person’s eyes,” he said onstage, his hands trembling. “And when the culture is divided so sharply, actors can help, at least a little, just by doing what we do.”

“They cast black people in ‘Black Panther,’ Asian people in “Crazy Rich Asians” and a green book in ‘Green Book,'” she said, and she noted that women had been nominated for playing a wife (Glenn Close in “The Wife”), a nanny (Emily Blunt in “Mary Poppins Returns”) and “a mom who wasn’t allowed to speak” (Blunt again).
