<h1>But while she was doing the reporting, something happened to change Edith Iglauer’s life. </h1>

She met a fisherman named John Daly, fell in love, married him and moved to his house in the remote village of Garden Bay. (They also spent time aboard his 41-foot troller, More Kelp.)

With that, Iglauer’s writerly attention shifted largely to the vast nation of prairies, Arctic ice and dramatic coastlines. An American, she was one of the keenest and most eloquent interpreters of Canada for its neighbor to the south.

Iglauer died on Feb. 13 at a hospital in Sechelt, British Columbia. She was 101. Her son Richard Hamburger said the cause was pneumonia.

Iglauer had been captivated by Canada well before the salmon assignment. In the 1960s, when she was a staff writer at The New Yorker, she began exploring regions of the country that journalists rarely visited, particularly its Arctic. She wrote definitive profiles of famous Canadians like Pierre Elliott Trudeau, the prime minister at the time, and architect Arthur Erickson. She also provided vividly detailed accounts about less prominent figures, like the workers who built a 325-mile winter ice road to the Arctic Circle.

The best known of her five books among Canadians, “Fishing With John” (1988), was both a love story about her relationship with the rough-hewn Daly and an examination of the world of commercial salmon fishermen in British Columbia.

In 1978, not five years after their wedding, Daly collapsed and died while dancing with Iglauer at a trapper’s ball in The Pas, Manitoba.

Iglauer had not yet completed her assignment, but William Shawn, editor of The New Yorker and a friend, encouraged her to finish — a process that ultimately took many years. She said later that she believed it was his way of helping her grieve. The article ballooned into the book, which Iglauer, a stickler for accuracy, had several fishermen read before publication to vet for technical errors.

The book was the basis of the 2000 television movie “Navigating the Heart,” in which Iglauer was played by Jaclyn Smith. But Iglauer disowned the production, in part because it included a fictionalized scene of Daly (played by Tim Matheson) sinking his ship — something she believed would never have occurred.

Iglauer did not write exclusively about Canada. She was one of a handful of journalists in the 1960s who reported on the health effects of air pollution; she also wrote about public housing and other topics.

Edith Theresa Iglauer was born in Cleveland on March 10, 1917, into a prosperous family. Her mother, Bertha (Good) Iglauer, a homemaker, was originally from Wheeling, West Virginia. Her father, Jay Iglauer, was executive vice president of Halle Brothers, then the city’s major department store.

The family spent its weekends horseback riding at a rustic cabin about 30 miles from Cleveland. In a 1988 interview with Alan Twigg, publisher of the literary website BC Booklook, Iglauer said that experience later made her feel at home in the Canadian Arctic.

“When I went to the Canadian north, I went right back to my childhood — plodding along after my father in the snow, having cold feet and cold hands, and not complaining,” she said. “It’s no adjustment for me to go to the Arctic and not have a regular toilet.”

Iglauer received a bachelor’s degree in political science at Wellesley College and a master’s from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 1939. It was at Columbia that she met future New Yorker writer Philip Hamburger. They married in 1942.

In 1945 she was accredited by The Cleveland News as a war correspondent. She told the paper she planned to go to Yugoslavia, pointing out that Cleveland had a large Slavic population.

By her own admission, she didn’t really know where she was going and by accident ended up aboard a flight to Casablanca otherwise filled with male members of the military.

“The soldiers were darling to me,” she said in 1988. “They carried my luggage; they really took care of me. I was just a kid still.”

She eventually made her way to Italy and met up with Hamburger, who was there covering the war for The New Yorker. And she did eventually report from Yugoslavia as well.

The couple divorced in 1966 but continued to review each other’s work until Hamburger’s death in 2004. In addition to her son Richard, a theater director in New York, Iglauer is survived by another son, Jay Hamburger, who is artistic director of a theater company in Vancouver, British Columbia, and two grandsons.

In 1961, she became a staff writer at The New Yorker. That same year she made what was to prove a pivotal trip to the Eastern Canadian Arctic to write about the formation of the Inuit cooperatives that transformed the region’s social and economic life. Her trips resulted not only in an article but also in a book, “The New People,” published in 1966. It was later updated and twice republished as “Inuit Journey.”

In the Arctic, Iglauer again found herself in a male-dominated milieu.

“I realize now how unconsciously I entered into what was then viewed as a man’s world,” she said in a convocation address at the University of Victoria in British Columbia in 2006. “Being the only woman on those trips seemed perfectly natural.”

Of all the people she profiled, Iglauer said she found Trudeau, the father of the current prime minister, Justin Trudeau, among the most frustrating. Generally impatient with journalists, Trudeau was reluctant to give her interview time. When they did meet, over a protracted meal, she scribbled notes under the table to make sure his comments were unguarded. The article remains one of the defining looks into Trudeau’s rise to office.

After that article was published in the summer of 1969, Trudeau came to New York. On a whim, Iglauer invited him to dinner with her family at their apartment. To her surprise, the prime minister accepted. Doubling that surprise, Trudeau, who was single at the time, brought Barbra Streisand as his guest.

In 2006 Iglauer married her third husband, Frank White, a former logging truck driver, excavator operator and gas station owner. White published a memoir in two volumes, the first in 2014 and the second in 2015, the year he died at age 101.

While Iglauer made her later life in Canada, she viewed herself as someone whose writing would convey the truth about the United States to Canada just as much as vice versa.

“The still small voice of truth,” she said, “is what I hear when I am writing.”

Tim Hortons, which started as a doughnut and coffee shop but later expanded into other fare, dominates Canada’s fast-food business to an extraordinary degree. There is one Timmies, as the shops are popularly known, for every 9,800 Canadians. By contrast, McDonald’s restaurants in the United States number one per 23,100 people.

Politicians trailed by cameras as they buy a “double-double” coffee (two creams, two sugars) at a Tim Hortons are now an inevitable part of Canadian election campaigns. To its fans, the chain is something of a national symbol.

As he neared the end of his hockey career, which was spent mostly with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Tim Horton founded the company that bears his name with Jim Charade, a Toronto businessman, in 1964. Charade left the company early on, and Joyce became Horton’s partner in 1966.

Horton, by then with the Buffalo Sabres, died in a car crash in early 1974 when the brand’s stores, like its doughnuts, were counted by the dozen. Joyce took full control of the company in 1975 by buying the half interest held by Lori Horton, Tim Horton’s widow, for 1 million Canadian dollars and a Cadillac Eldorado. (Lori Horton, who died in 2000, unsuccessfully sued Joyce to recover that stake.)

He then led the expansion that eventually turned the chain into a national phenomenon, taking it from 40 stores to 3,665 in Canada and another 1,135 in the United States and other countries.

Ronald Vaughan Joyce was born on Oct. 19, 1930, in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. His father, Willard, who struggled to find work in construction during the Great Depression, died in a road accident when Ron was 3. His mother, Grace (Jollymore) Joyce, often left Ron and his two siblings with relatives so she could take jobs to supplement her widow’s pension.

Joyce landed in Hamilton, Ontario, where, after a stint working in a tire factory, he became a police officer. He married Lynda Korolenchuk in 1949 and joined the Royal Canadian Navy, where he served for five years before the couple divorced in 1958.

In 1963 he married Theresa McEwan. The couple separated in 1975. According to his 2006 memoir, “Always Fresh,” written with Robert Thompson, Joyce had seven children between the two marriages. Complete information on survivors was not available.

To boost his income, Joyce purchased a Dairy Queen franchise the same year he remarried. Turned down by the company for a second franchise, he visited the first Tim Hortons doughnut shop, a converted service station in Hamilton.

He borrowed CA$10,000 from a credit union and bought the store as a franchise. He quit the police force to run the store full time and worked with a baker who, Joyce said in his memoir, set the nightly production levels after consulting a Ouija board.

“I thought the whole thing was crazy, but I’d invested money and decided I’d wait to see how it worked out,” he wrote. “Not surprisingly, things didn’t immediately improve.”

But soon the business turned around and he and Horton became partners in the parent company, which began selling franchises in other locations in the Hamilton area.

In its early years under Joyce, the company focused on franchising in smaller communities, where competition from other fast-food chains was limited and relatively little money was needed for advertising.

That small-town focus, Joyce said in his book, gave the company a foothold that worked to its advantage when it finally moved to fill big-city Canada with its shops.

“People grew up with our coffee and donuts and when they moved to places like Toronto, they were looking for the familiar, which is what we offered,” he wrote.

Over time, Tim Hortons innovated. In 1975 it introduced bite-size Timbits, which remain a signature product. It was one of the first restaurants in Canada to confine smoking to sealed rooms and then to ban it altogether. It dropped “donuts” from its sign and added sandwiches, soups and yogurt to its menu. Despite Joyce’s initial hesitancy, the chain embraced drive-through sales.

As the company’s success grew, so did friction with some franchise owners over issues like the cost of supplies. Unions have also been critical of its record as an employer. Efforts to match the chain’s runaway Canadian success in the United States have been mostly disappointing.

At Tim Hortons, Joyce set up a foundation that operates camps for children from low-income families. He later established a family foundation focused on children’s health care and education.

In 1996 he sold the business to the U.S. hamburger chain Wendy’s for about CA$600 million in cash and stock. While Joyce became the largest shareholder in the combined company, he later said that he regretted the sale.

Tim Hortons became independent again 10 years later. In 2014 it was bought outright by the owners of Burger King, prompting something of an outcry from some Canadians.

On Wednesday, Tim Hortons resumed an annual promotion that Joyce started in 1986, in which customers turn up the rim of special coffee cups to see if they’ve won prizes ranging from cars down to, more commonly, doughnuts. The reappearance of the promotion, “Rrroll Up the Rim to Win,” is greeted by many Canadians almost as much for marking the unofficial midpoint of winter as for the prizes it offers.
