Security analysts caution against misuse of digital number plates

The works ministry revealed plans to roll out the controversial digital surveillance car number plates in an effort to curb crime in a project dubbed: “The Intelligent Transport Management System.”

Grace Matsiko, a security analyst, said once rolled, digital number plates will go a long way in fighting crime, but it should not be abused by state agents.

The works ministry permanent secretary, Bageya Waiswa, said they will start with government vehicles before guidelines regarding the same are issued to other motorists.

There is growing concern from the public about the increasing rate of crime.

Recently, residents of Buwongo Trading centre in Makuutu sub-county in Bugweri were last year left in shock after a man hacked a colleague to death for allegedly having an affair with his girlfriend.

In the same month (December) three police officers in Lira District were arrested for allegedly shooting to death a 48-year-old woman while on duty.

The police officers whose names are being withheld for fear of jeopardising the investigations had rushed to rescue a one James Ango, a resident of Atongo-Kongo village, Itek sub-county in Lira district who was being beaten by a mob for allegedly stealing money.

Police in Rubanda district is also investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a couple.

It is alleged that on December 21, 2022, at about 19:00hrs, Mujuni Werreni, 45, was found murdered on the way to his house. His neighbour made an alarm, which attracted other residents to storm the scene of the crime. Also, dead was his wife, whose name had not been revealed by press time.

The Uganda Police Crime Report 2021 shows that there was a slight increase in the volume of crimes reported to the police, from 195,931 cases reported in 2020 to 196,081 cases reported in 2021.

According to the report, a total of 440 people were killed as a result of aggravated domestic violence, of whom, 213 were male adults, 169 were female adults, 33 were male juveniles and 24 were female juveniles as compared to 373 people killed in 2019 as a result of domestic violence, of whom, 175 were male adults, 141 were female adults, 37 were male juveniles and 20 were female juveniles.
