Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has responded to the widespread vitriol online that followed the passing of its Kampala Vice Chairperson, Cedric Babu.
The death of the 46-year-old in Nairobi last weekend was met with a wave of mixed reactions, especially on social media.
While many Ugandans mourned the loss of a prominent media personality, sports administrator, and politician, some social media users, particularly those sympathetic to the political opposition, expressed controversial views.
These individuals, including some political critics, celebrated Cedric's death and accused him of being an “enabler of the oppressor,” a reference to Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, with whom Cedric was closely associated.
Others blamed the deceased for being “silent” as his boss gloated about torturing and maiming political dissidents.

Toyota Responds to Negative Comments
Michael Nuwagira Toyota, the National Vice-Chairperson of PLU, expressed deep dismay at the negative and hostile comments circulating on social media following Cedric's death.
Speaking out against those who celebrated the loss, Toyota said, “Such people are enemies because if someone has died, and you are making such comments when you know that everybody will eventually die… We just pray to God to forgive such people who can make such comments at such a terrible moment.”
He further remarked that Cedric leaves behind a grieving family, including children, and that such insensitive remarks were deeply hurtful.
“For us, this does not change anything. We know what we are ready to do for this country. We shall move on.”
